The housing in Mesa runs in rough bands from west to east. Central and west Mesa hold the 1950s to 1970s ranch homes and the citrus-lot estates, many with original tile, plaster walls and a lot of horizontal surface for dust to settle on. The northeast, Alta Mesa and Las Sendas and Red Mountain Ranch, is 1980s and 1990s tract with stucco, pools and HOAs that care about the front of the house. Two things make cleaning in Mesa different from cleaning in a wetter, softer-water city. The first is hard water. Mesa's supply runs about 12 to 15 grains per gallon in the surface-water city zone and 17 to 22 grains in the groundwater-fed eastern zone, against a national average of 6 to 8.
